Simplex 4098-9733 — a white, NEMA 1 rated TrueAlarm addressable heat sensor providing rate-compensated fixed temperature sensing, selectable with or without rate-of-rise operation.
The 4098-9733 is self-restoring. Its thermistor measures the local temperature and the base digitizes and transmits that analog value to the fire alarm control unit every four seconds over IDNet or MAPNET II, where it is compared against a stored running average and time to determine an alarm or abnormal condition. Both the fixed temperature set point and the rate-of-rise selection are made at the control unit rather than in the device, and the same sensor can also be programmed as a utility device to watch for temperature extremes — useful for freeze warnings or HVAC fault alerts. Because it shares the TrueAlarm base family with the photoelectric sensors, it can be substituted for a smoke sensor during dusty construction phases without reprogramming. The sensor head is a separate SKU from its base.

Installation notes
-
Heat is not smoke detection: Johnson Controls warns that in most fires hazardous levels of smoke and toxic gas can build up before a heat detection device would initiate an alarm. Where life safety is a factor, smoke detection is strongly recommended.
-
Slow fires: in a slowly developing fire the temperature may not rise fast enough to trip the rate-of-rise feature, but an alarm is still initiated when the rated fixed temperature is reached.
-
Spacing depends on the set point: moving the panel programming from 135°F to 155°F cuts the listed UL/ULC spacing from 60 ft x 60 ft to 40 ft x 40 ft, so the set point and the device layout have to be decided together.
-
Base ordered separately: the addressable electronics and the address DIP switch are in the base, so the address stays with the location when the head is changed.
-
Box requirements: a 4 in. octagonal or 4 in. square box of 1-1/2 in. minimum depth, or a single-gang box of 2 in. minimum depth, is required for the standard base; the 4098-9832 adapter plate is required for surface or semi-flush mounting to a 4 in. square box and for surface mounting to a 4 in. octagonal box.
-
Type mismatch is annunciated: if this sensor is fitted where the panel is programmed for a smoke sensor, the panel reports an incorrect sensor type but the heat sensor still operates at a default sensitivity.
