Simplex 4098-9714 — a TrueAlarm addressable photoelectric smoke sensor for Simplex IDNet and MAPNET II fire alarm control units.
The 4098-9714 uses a pulsed LED light source and a silicon photodiode receiver to measure smoke obscuration, and its base digitizes and transmits that analog value to the control unit every four seconds. The control unit maintains a running average for each sensor and compares the present value against that average over time, which compensates for dust, dirt and component aging and reduces nuisance alarms. Peak values are logged at the panel so sensitivity can be selected per point, and the panel can apply timed or multi-stage set points — for example a 0.2% level for investigation and a higher level for alarm. The sensor head is a separate SKU from its base; a TrueAlarm base such as the 4098-9792 is ordered separately and carries the address DIP switch.

Installation notes
-
UL 268 7th Edition limit: fixed sensitivity settings higher than 1.0% per foot are not UL 268 7th Edition compliant.
-
Base ordered separately: the addressable electronics and the address DIP switch live in the base, not the sensor head, so the address stays with the location when a sensor is swapped.
-
Box requirements: a 4 in. octagonal or 4 in. square box of 1-1/2 in. minimum depth, or a single-gang box of 2 in. minimum depth, is required for the standard base.
-
Adapter plate: the 4098-9832 adapter plate is required for surface or semi-flush mounting to a 4 in. square box and for surface mounting to a 4 in. octagonal box.
-
Spacing: on smooth ceilings a 30 ft (9.1 m) smoke sensor spacing may be used as a guide; select locations per NFPA 72 after considering the layout and contents of the protected area.
-
Air velocity: because sensing is photoelectric, air velocity is not normally a factor other than its effect on smoke flow through the area.
-
Sensor substitution: a heat sensor can be fitted to the same base during dusty construction phases without reprogramming; the panel reports an incorrect sensor type but the heat sensor operates at a default sensitivity.
Compatibility
The Simplex 4098-9714 smoke sensor plugs into the TrueAlarm bases listed above and works with Simplex IDNet and MAPNET II control units. The black standard base, 4098-9776, is available as the Simplex 4098-9776 base; order the base separately from the sensor head.
