Edwards Signature Optica SIGA-OSD smoke detector

The current Edwards Signature photoelectric smoke detector is the Signature Optica SIGA-OSD. Edwards lists it for the same Signature bases as the SIGA-PD and for panels with a Signature loop controller, and markets Optica as a retrofit that keeps the existing base and wiring.

One caution before the details. We list the SIGA-OSD as the replacement for the SIGA-PD because it is the current detector with the same sensing function on the same bases. We did not find an Edwards bulletin that states the cross-reference part for part or gives a minimum firmware version for each panel, so this guide tells you what the Edwards documents say and which document settles the rest.

Which Signature Optica model takes the place of each older Signature detector?

Match the sensing function. The table lists the current models from the Edwards data sheets; the right-hand column is a function match made by us, not an Edwards cross-reference.

Current model What it senses (Edwards data sheet) Older Signature models with the same function
SIGA-OSD Optical smoke. Listed to UL 268 7th edition and UL 268A. Sensitivity range 0.5 to 4.36 %/ft. SIGA-PD, SIGA-PS
SIGA-OSHD Optical smoke plus heat: 135°F fixed temperature and 15°F per minute rate-of-rise. SIGA-PHD, SIGA-PHS
SIGA-OSCD Optical smoke plus carbon monoxide. Listed to UL 268 7th edition and UL 2075. SIGA-PCD
SIGA-OSHCD Optical smoke, heat and carbon monoxide in one head. No single older model in our catalog
SIGA-HRD / SIGA-HFD Heat only: fixed temperature with rate-of-rise (HRD) or fixed temperature only (HFD). SIGA-HRS, SIGA-HFS

The SIGA-PD data sheet lists the detector to UL 268 and UL 268A; the SIGA-OSD data sheet lists UL 268 7th edition. The sensitivity ranges are not identical either (0.53 to 3.94 %/ft on the SIGA-PD, 0.5 to 4.36 %/ft on the SIGA-OSD), and the current heat detectors are listed at 50 ft spacing, so compare both data sheets before you reuse a setting or a layout from the old device.

Does the SIGA-OSD fit my existing SIGA-SB, SIGA-RB, SIGA-IB or SIGA-AB4G base?

Yes. The SIGA-OSD data sheet and installation sheet list the same bases as the SIGA-PD data sheet, and the Optica brochure describes retrofitting without changing an existing Signature detector base.

Base Type Point to check
SIGA-SB / SIGA-SB4 Standard The only bases that support the SIGA-LED remote alarm LED.
SIGA-RB / SIGA-RB4 Relay Contact rated 1 A at 30 VDC, pilot duty. No remote LED.
SIGA-IB / SIGA-IB4 Fault isolator A detector must be installed for the isolator to operate. No remote LED.
SIGA-AB4G Sounder For smoke and heat detectors. Not intended for combination CO detectors in Fire-plus-CO mode.
SIGA-AB4GT / SIGA-AB4G-LF Sounder for fire and CO Supports CO detectors when used with a SIGA-TCDR temporal pattern generator. The -LF version sounds at 520 Hz.

The "4" versions mount to a 4 inch square box and come with the SIGA-TS4 trim skirt. Edwards' sounder base data sheet states that all three sounder bases work with first and second generation Signature detectors when properly configured.

Will my panel (EST3, EST3X, EST4, iO) accept a SIGA-OSD, and does it need a firmware update?

Edwards states that the SIGA-OSD is compatible only with control panels using a Signature loop controller. It does not publish, in any document we could retrieve, a minimum firmware version for each panel family, so we will not quote one.

What Edwards does say:

  • Every Optica data sheet carries the note that some features may not be supported by all control systems and tells you to check the control panel's Installation and Operation Guide.
  • The Optica brochure says the detectors work with current or existing Edwards fire panels with no rewiring or reprogramming, and also speaks of "minimal system updates". Read those two statements together: plan for the possibility of a panel update.
  • On the CO models, sensor life is tracked by the panel. The SIGA-OSCD and SIGA-OSHCD data sheets give a 10-year CO sensor life and note that EST3 and EST3X panels support 6-year life timing.

The document that settles it for your site is the compatibility list for your panel, in its current revision, together with the panel's Installation and Operation Guide. For EST3 that is the EST3 Compatibility List, P/N 3100427; Edwards' iO literature refers to the iO64 and iO1000 Series Compatibility List, P/N 3102353-EN. Check that SIGA-OSD appears in the revision that matches your installed firmware. Older revisions predate Optica: the 2014 revision of the EST3 list that we read does not include it.

Can old and new Signature detectors be mixed on one loop?

Edwards documents both generations for the same Signature loop controller, with up to 250 Signature addresses per loop, and describes Optica as backwards compatible. The data sheets do not state loop mixing in so many words, so confirm it on the panel's compatibility list.

Keep one Signature behavior in mind. The loop controller maps each device by serial number and supervises its installed location. A new head is a new serial number, so follow the panel's procedure for replacing a device instead of assuming the swap is invisible to the panel.

What is the difference between SIGA-OSD, SIGA-OSHD, SIGA-OSCD and SIGA-OSD-IN?

The first three differ by sensor, as in the first table: smoke only, smoke plus heat, smoke plus CO. All share the Optica chamber, the 15.20 to 19.95 VDC operating range and the same base family.

  • -NL is the same detector with no visible logo (SIGA-OSD-NL, SIGA-OSHD-NL, SIGA-OSCD-NL).
  • B at the end (SIGA-OSHDB, SIGA-OSHCDB) is the black version, which the data sheets pair with the SIGA-TSB.
  • -IN: the current Edwards data sheet for the smoke detector lists SIGA-OSD and SIGA-OSD-NL only. We have not found an Edwards document that defines the -IN suffix on the SIGA-OSD-IN, so ask us before ordering it for a job that specifies SIGA-OSD.

What to order

For a like-for-like smoke detector swap, order the SIGA-OSD head and reuse the base if it is sound. Bases and other Signature devices are in the Edwards collection and the detector bases collection. For a mixed list of heads, bases and modules, or a part you do not see, request a quote.

Compatibility must be confirmed against the control panel's listing documents, and the installation must follow NFPA 72 and the local AHJ.
