Commercial Smoke Detectors, Addressable and Conventional

A commercial smoke detector is an initiating device that reports products of combustion back to a fire alarm control panel, as distinct from a self-contained residential smoke alarm that only sounds locally. This collection covers detector heads, bases and accessories for commercial and industrial systems.

The distinctions that matter when specifying:

• Addressable or conventional - addressable detectors sit on an SLC loop and report an individual point address and analog sensitivity value to the panel, while conventional detectors report by zone on a 2-wire or 4-wire initiating circuit
• Photoelectric or ionization - photoelectric responds sooner to smouldering fires and is the norm in commercial work
• Multi-criteria and combination detectors that add heat, carbon monoxide or infrared sensing to cut nuisance alarms
• Bases - standard, relay, sounder and isolator bases, ordered separately from the head on most addressable lines
