Notifier AFP-100 intelligent fire alarm control panel

The horn strobes and strobes compatible with a Notifier AFP-100 are the ones listed in Notifier's Device Compatibility Document, number 15378. Revision CB lists System Sensor SpectrAlert, SpectrAlert Advance and xenon L-Series appliances, plus Gentex and Wheelock models. It does not list the L-Series LED models.

That document, not a distributor's list, is the authority. This page covers what it says about the AFP-100, the panel's NAC ratings, and why LED appliances need a closer look.

Which notification appliances are on the AFP-100 compatibility list?

The Device Compatibility Document groups the AFP-100 with panels listed to UL 864 8th Edition and gives its NAC power as full wave rectified (FWR). It then states that panels whose notification circuits are supplied by special application power must use the appliances listed in its tables. Revision CB (January 5, 2022) contains these appliance tables:

Table in 15378:CB Appliance family Examples listed
Table 6 System Sensor (earlier SpectrAlert and related) H24 horn, CH24MC chime, MDL sync module
Table 8 System Sensor SpectrAlert Advance Wall, ceiling, outdoor and speaker strobe models
Table 9 System Sensor L-Series (xenon) P2RL, P2WL, PC2RL, PC2WL, SRL, SWL, SCRL, SCWL, HRL, HWL
Tables 10 and 11 System Sensor low-frequency devices L-Series and SpectrAlert Advance LF models
Table 12 Gentex ST24 strobes, SPKE8 speaker strobes
Tables 13 and 14 Cooper Wheelock, including Exceder AS series audible strobes, Exceder HN series horns

Each row in those tables gives the appliance's current on FWR and on filtered DC, and which sync module it works with. Read the notes at the head of each table: some tables are restricted to certain panels, and the document marks some models as discontinued.

Is the System Sensor P2RL compatible with the Notifier AFP-100?

The xenon P2RL is listed in Table 9 of revision CB. The table shows 326 mA on FWR and 262 mA on filtered DC as its worst-case current, and "Yes" for synchronization with the MDL module. Table 9 carries no panel restriction in its heading, and the page that opens the appliance tables names the AFP-100 among the 8th Edition panels they apply to. The same table lists the P2WL, PC2RL, PC2WL, SRL, SWL, SCRL and SCWL.

Are L-Series LED devices usable on an AFP-100 NAC?

Do not assume so. Two manufacturer documents point the other way:

  • Revision CB of the compatibility document predates the LED line and does not list P2RLED, PC2WLED, SRLED or any other LED model.
  • System Sensor's installation manual for the L-Series with LED rates those strobes and horn strobes for regulated 24 VDC, 16 to 33 V, and gives no FWR current. The AFP-100 manual describes the panel's two NACs as nonregulated, special purpose power, and the compatibility document gives its NAC power as FWR.

Before putting an LED appliance such as the P2RLED, PC2WLED or SRLED on this panel, ask Notifier technical support for the latest revision of document 15378 and check whether the model appears for the AFP-100.

The alternative is a separate listed power supply with regulated outputs, triggered by the panel's NAC. Honeywell's HPF-PS10 data sheet describes filtered, regulated 24 VDC outputs, System Sensor synchronization, and operation with any UL 864 panel that uses a reverse-polarity notification circuit. Whether that is acceptable for a given appliance is settled by the power supply's own compatibility listing and the AHJ.

What are the AFP-100 NAC specifications?

From the AFP-100 Installation, Programming and Operating Manual (document 51010, revision A, 12/15/98):

Item AFP-100 rating
NACs on the main board Two (TB1 and TB2), Style Y (Class B) or Style Z (Class A)
Power type Nonregulated, special purpose power, 24 VDC nominal
Maximum signaling current per circuit 2.5 A
NAC power available 3.0 A, expandable to 6.0 A
Total limit 6.0 A for the NACs and the other DC power outputs combined; more than 3.6 A of external system current requires the XRM-24 transformer and 12 AH or 18 AH batteries
End-of-line resistor 4.7 kΩ, 1/2 watt

For loads beyond those figures, see the store's power supplies collection.

Does the AFP-100 synchronize strobes itself, or does it need a sync module?

The 1998 manual revision we read lists Continuous, March Time, Temporal and California coding for the main board NACs and does not describe a strobe synchronization protocol. The compatibility document handles sync appliance by appliance, in a column headed "Sync. with MDL module", and lists System Sensor MDL sync modules among the compatible devices.

System Sensor's xenon L-Series manual says sync needs a power supply that generates the System Sensor sync pulses, a panel NAC configured for that protocol, or an MDL3 module. On an AFP-100 that points to a module on the circuit, such as the MDL3R. For Wheelock appliances the compatibility document names Wheelock SM/DSM modules in the sync column, such as the DSM-12/24-R, and for Gentex strobes it names the AVS44. Later manual revisions may differ, so check the one that matches your panel.

Is the AFP-100 discontinued, and which parts are still available?

We did not find a Notifier discontinuation notice for the AFP-100, so we will not state a status here. What the documents show is that the manual revision we read dates from 1998 and that Notifier's compatibility document files the panel under UL 864 8th Edition. For the AFP-100 itself, its boards, or listed appliances for an existing system, request a quote and include the appliance part numbers already installed.

Compatibility must be confirmed against the control panel's listing documents, and the installation must follow NFPA 72 and the local AHJ.
