4903-9193 — Simplex speaker/visible (S/V) notification appliance in a white housing with red FIRE lettering, for horizontal wall mount, combining a multi-tapped speaker with a 15 candela high-intensity xenon strobe selectable for free-run or synchronized flash.
Speaker/visible appliances provide audio/tone notification and visible notification from the same appliance, with the speaker and strobe wired to separate terminals. The speaker is multi-tapped at 1/4, 1/2, 1 or 2 W for either 25 VRMS or 70.7 VRMS audio circuits, with tap selection made by a single jumper wire and pressure connector that attaches to one of eight terminals. The strobe operates on regulated 24 VDC and its candela rating is clearly indicated on the reflector. An on-board selection switch sets the strobe for free-run or synchronized operation; when synchronized, flash is controlled from Simplex fire alarm control panels providing strobe synchronization signals on their NACs, from 4905-9914 (Class B) or 4905-9922 (Class A) synchronized flash modules, or from a 4009 IDNet NAC Extender. The housing is rugged, impact-resistant thermoplastic with an impact-resistant polycarbonate lens, and mounts to a 4 in. square, 1-1/2 in. deep box with a 1-1/2 in. extension.

Installation notes
-
This is a speaker/strobe, not a strobe-only appliance: the 4903-9193 includes a multi-tapped speaker that must be connected to a conventional fire alarm audio circuit. Speaker and strobe are wired separately, on separate terminals.
-
Mounting height: NFPA 72 requires that the entire lens be not less than 80″ (2.03 m) and not greater than 96″ (2.44 m) above the finished floor.
-
Box requirement: mounts to a 4 in. square, 1-1/2 in. deep box (RACO #191 or equal) with a 1-1/2 in. extension (RACO #203 or equal), supplied by others. Note box orientation for horizontal mounting.
-
Operating voltage limits: 16 to 33 VDC is the absolute operating range; operation outside this range may cause permanent damage. 16 VDC is the lowest voltage allowed at the last appliance on the NAC under worst-case conditions.
-
Current for NAC calculations: the 90 mA figure is the nameplate maximum RMS rating and occurs at the lowest allowable operating voltage — strobe designs are constant wattage, so current falls to 60 mA at 24 VDC.
-
Synchronization: set free-run or synchronized with the on-board switch; synchronized operation requires a panel NAC providing Simplex sync signals, a 4905-9914/4905-9922 flash module, or a 4009 IDNet NAC Extender (4009-9201 or 4009-9301).
-
Low-frequency signaling: the speaker is compliant with NFPA 72 520 Hz low frequency signal requirements for sleeping areas.
-
Listing caveat: this product was not ULC listed or FM approved as of the document revision date.
