Simplex 4098-9794 — a modular TrueAlarm addressable sensor base with a built-in piezoelectric alarm sounder, for use with interchangeable TrueAlarm photoelectric or heat sensors ordered separately.
The 4098-9794 does two jobs at one ceiling or wall location: it is a full TrueAlarm base, carrying the addressable electronics and the address DIP switch under the removable sensor head, and it is a listed audible notification appliance in its own right. That makes it the standard answer for sleeping-room and dwelling-unit designs where a local sounder is required at the detector rather than a separate horn. The sounder produces 88 dBA at 10 ft while drawing only 20 mA, and it can be powered either from a steady 24 VDC source or directly from a compatible notification appliance circuit. When NAC powered, it sounds when the NAC is in alarm, so it follows whatever synchronized pattern the NAC is driving — Temporal or March Time, for example. It can also be activated manually from the fire alarm control unit. Sensors are ordered separately; the base accepts the 4098-9714 photoelectric smoke sensor or the 4098-9733 heat sensor.

Installation notes

Channel loading is not unlimited: Johnson Controls notes that the number of sounder bases available on the same communications channel varies with the FACU application and the availability of NAC power. Check the specific FACU requirements before laying out a floor.

Synchronization source: the sounder synchronizes through communications, or by the NAC if it is NAC powered. Choosing NAC power is what buys you a coded pattern that matches the building horns.

Supervision must match the power source: select supervised operation for a continuous 24 VDC feed so loss of power is reported to the panel; select unsupervised when the sounder is fed from a NAC, because the NAC already supervises the circuit.

Sound output louvers extend from the front to the side of the base, so obstructing the side of the base reduces output.

Relay option needs volume: the 4098-9822 relay measures 2-1/2 in. x 1-1/2 in. x 1 in. (3.75 cubic inches) and mounts only in the base electrical box, requiring a 1-1/2 in. extension ring on a 4 in. square or octagonal box, plus external 24 VDC coil power.

Surface mounting: use a 4 in. square box with a single gang adapter plate (RACO No. 787 or equal, by others) or a 4 in. octagonal box — both also require the 4098-9832 adapter plate. Flush mounting should sit even with the final surface or recessed no more than 1/4 in.

Sensor ordered separately: the base ships without a sensor head, and the address stays in the base so sensors can be serviced or substituted without reprogramming.

Spacing: on smooth ceilings a 30 ft (9.1 m) smoke sensor spacing may be used as a guide; select locations per NFPA 72.
