COSMO-4W — System Sensor i4 Series 12/24 V system-connected combination carbon monoxide and photoelectric smoke detector, 4-wire, with an 85 dBA sounder, a field-replaceable CO cell and RealTest functional gas testing. Plug-in head with base.
The COSMO-4W combines photoelectric smoke sensing and an electrochemical CO cell in a single device, so an area needs one back box and one wire run instead of two. It sends distinct smoke and CO signals to the panel and sounds Temporal 3 for smoke and Temporal 4 for CO, so occupants and the central station can tell the two events apart. The COSMO-4W cannot be wired directly to a control panel — the COSMOD4W 4-wire interface module is required, and 4-wire systems also require an EOLR-1 end-of-line relay. One module connects up to 12 detectors to a panel using only two or three zones (smoke, CO and an optional trouble zone) and interconnects all detector sounders, so when one device alarms they all sound; no RRS-MOD is needed for that interconnection. Drift compensation and smoothing algorithms hold smoke sensitivity steady, sensitivity is read with the SENS-RDR, and the CO cell is replaced tool-free in the field with a CO-REPL at end of life instead of scrapping the detector.

Installation notes

The COSMOD4W module is not optional: the ordering information lists the 4-wire interface module as required to use COSMO-4W models. Budget one module per group of up to 12 detectors, plus two to three panel zones. A COSMO-4W bought without a module cannot be commissioned.

EOLR-1 required: the ordering information lists the EOLR-1 end-of-line relay as required with 4-wire systems. Order it with the detectors, not after the fact.

Match the module to the wiring type: COSMOD4W works with COSMO-4W combination detectors and i3 4WTA-B smoke detectors. COSMOD2W works with COSMO-2W and 2WTA-B. The two are not interchangeable.

EZ Walk and the maintenance signal are 2-wire features: the data sheet restricts the EZ Walk loop test and the loop maintenance/cleaning LED indication to 2-wire detectors, and Style D / Class A IDC wiring to the 2-wire module. Do not specify those capabilities on a 4-wire COSMO-4W job.

Loop resistance limit: the 4-wire module allows a maximum loop wiring resistance of 300 ohms, versus 50 ohms on the 2-wire module.

Module supply voltage: the 4-wire module operates from 12/24 VDC nominal with a minimum of 10 V and a maximum of 35 VDC, power limited. Module standby current is 52 mA maximum and alarm current 78 mA maximum, not including the current drawn by attached detectors or the EOL relay.

Two tones mean two events: Temporal 3 is smoke and Temporal 4 is CO. Occupant response differs between the two, so do not describe the sounder as a single alarm tone.

Replace the cell, not the detector: at the ten-year end of life the detector signals the panel and chirps. Fit a CO-REPL replacement cell, which changes in the field without a tool.

Field CO testing: RealTest lets the CO cell be validated in place with canned CO, and the external IR LED supports extended-range sensitivity testing with the SENS-RDR.
