Edwards SIGA-278 Double Action Pull Station

Edwards SIGA-278 — a Signature Series intelligent double action, single stage manual fire alarm station in a contemporary red Lexan housing with keyed reset.

To initiate an alarm the user first lifts the upper door marked “LIFT THEN PULL HANDLE,” then pulls the alarm handle — the two-step action that distinguishes it from the single-action teardrop SIGA-270. An integral microprocessor makes all decisions at the station, which allows a lower loop communication speed while improving control panel response time and leaves the circuit less sensitive to line noise and wiring properties; twisted or shielded wire is not required. Non-volatile memory permanently stores the programmable address, serial number, device type and job number, and automatically maintains hours of operation, last maintenance date, alarm and trouble counts, and the time and date of the last alarm.

The reset key (276-K1) is supplied with all key reset stations.

Installation notes

• One address, unlike the two-stage station: the SIGA-278 uses one module address and draws 250 µA standby / 400 µA activated. The two-stage presignal SIGA-270P uses two module addresses and draws 396 µA / 680 µA. Size the loop accordingly if you are substituting one for the other.
• Box openings must be angular: the data sheet states that openings must be angular and that rounded openings are not acceptable. As a single-stage station the SIGA-278 mounts to North American 2-1/2 in. (64 mm) deep 1-gang boxes. Note that the recommended boxes named in the sheet (Steel City 52-C-13, or Iberville CI-52-C-49-1/2 in Canada) appear in the same paragraph immediately after the separate 4-inch square requirement for two-stage models, so which model they are recommended for is not stated unambiguously — verify before specifying a box.
• Testing needs the key: to test or reset, open the station and operate the exposed switch. The SIGA-270 series opens with a tool; the SIGA-278 requires the key supplied with the station. Keep track of it.
• A questionable accessory entry: the sheet lists “276-GLR, 20 Glass Rods — for SIGA-278 series” among accessories, yet the same document describes the SIGA-278 as a lift-door double action Lexan station and attributes break-glass operation and the visible glass rod only to the SIGA-270 series. The two statements do not sit together; confirm with Edwards whether a glass rod applies to your SIGA-278 variant before ordering replacements.
• Wiring: all wiring is power limited and supervised. Refer to the Signature Loop Controller manual for maximum wire distance.
• Addressing: electronic, with no switches or dials. The loop controller assigns a soft address to the station’s unique serial number, or the SIGA-PRO Signature Program/Service Tool can be used.
• Power dependency: the station will not operate without electrical power.
• Ambient limit: rated for installation in ambient temperatures up to 120°F (49°C).
