Simplex 4906-9127 — a wall-mount TrueAlert audible/visible notification appliance combining a low-current electronic horn with a multi-candela synchronized xenon strobe, in a red housing with white FIRE lettering, for SmartSync two-wire control.
What defines this appliance is SmartSync. On a single two-wire NAC it runs the horn and the strobe as separate functions: the horn is "on-until-silenced" and the strobe is "on-until-reset," so the audible can be silenced while the visible keeps flashing without a second pair of conductors. SmartSync also selects the horn pattern — ANSI Temporal, 60 BPM March Time, or continuous — and keeps every strobe on the circuit flashing together at 1 Hz. Strobe intensity is set in the field to 15, 30, 75 or 110 candela with a selection plug behind the strobe housing; a yellow flag with black letters shows the chosen setting through a viewing slot at the side of the lens, and the factory setting is 15 cd. The one-piece housing, lens included, is rugged impact- and vandal-resistant thermoplastic, and its wiring terminals are reachable from the front, which makes installation, inspection and testing considerably easier than pulling the device off the box.

Mounting height is code, not preference: NFPA 72 requires the entire lens to be not less than 80 in. and not greater than 96 in. above the finished floor.

16 VDC is an absolute floor: the 16 to 33 VDC range is the absolute operating range, and operation outside it may cause permanent damage. 16 VDC is the lowest voltage allowed at the last appliance on the NAC under worst-case conditions — that is the number voltage-drop calculations must land above.

Size the NAC from the maximum RMS rating. Strobe designs are constant wattage, so maximum RMS current occurs at the lowest allowable operating voltage. The nameplate 285 mA at 110 cd, not the 190 mA at 24 VDC, is the figure for circuit loading. Listed currents are with the horn on steady.

Set candela from the rear: the intensity selection plug is accessible only from the rear of the housing, so it must be set before the device goes on the box. Confirm the setting afterwards through the strobe intensity viewing slot.

SmartSync is required for split control: the on-until-silenced horn and on-until-reset strobe behavior only exists on a SmartSync circuit. On a plain conventional NAC you lose separate horn silencing.

Sound attenuation: where output must be reduced — stairwells, small rooms, highly reverberant areas — the 4905-9838 adhesive-backed sound damper attenuates 5 to 6 dBA. Measure the sound level after installing it to confirm the result still complies with applicable code.

Which dBA figure to use: the manufacturer notes that anechoic horn output ratings are typically more representative of actual installed sound output, and that coded peak readings typically run about 4 dBA above the coded values listed.

Surface boxes need a skirt: use the 4905-9937 (red) or 4905-9940 (white) surface mount adapter skirt to cover a 1-1/2 in. deep surface mounted box.
