CHSWL — System Sensor L-Series selectable-output chime strobe, wall mount, white housing. The strobe uses a xenon flash tube; this is not an LED model.
Selectable-output chimes and chime/strobes are private mode notification appliances used to alert trained personnel to investigate possible emergency situations and to take appropriate action. Security guard and nurse workstations are ideal locations for chime products. All devices feature a plug-in design with minimal intrusion into the back box, making the installation fast and foolproof while virtually eliminating costly and time-consuming ground faults. Installers can adapt devices to a wide range of application requirements using field-selectable candela settings, automatic selection of 12- or 24-volt operation, and a rotary switch for chime tones with two volume settings. The chime strobe complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements for visible signaling appliances, flashing at 1 Hz over the strobe’s entire operating voltage range.

Installation notes

12 V operation is limited to 15 and 30 cd. The data sheet states that CHS products will operate at 12 V nominal only for 15 and 30 candela. Any design needing 75 cd or higher must run the circuit at 24 V nominal.

Wall candela set: wall units use 15/30/75/95/110/135/185 cd. Ceiling chime strobes (CHSCRL, CHSCWL) use 15/30/75/95/115/150/177 cd. The two sets and their current draw tables are not interchangeable.

Wall models are listed for wall mounting only. Ceiling models are listed for ceiling mounting only — a CHSWL cannot be substituted onto a ceiling.

The coded tone is chime-only: the data sheet marks the coded pattern (switch position 9) as being for chime models. The chime strobe uses the four chime patterns at high or low volume.

Private mode device: chime output is well below the level of a fire alarm horn — 78 dBA at the loudest setting, 55 dBA at the quietest. These are intended to alert trained staff, not to serve as public-mode evacuation signals.

Back boxes: mounts to a standard 4 × 4 × 1½-inch back box, 4-inch octagon back box, single-gang 2 × 4 × 1⅝-inch back box, or double-gang back box. The notification appliance circuit wiring terminates at the universal mounting plate.

Synchronization: the Sync•Circuit Module synchronizes strobes at 1 Hz and all available chime tones, and can silence the chimes on chime/strobe models while the strobes keep operating over a single pair of wires. It must not be operated from a coded power supply.

Retrofit: electrically compatible with legacy SpectrAlert and SpectrAlert Advance devices.
