A duct housing samples air from a moving air stream through an inlet tube and returns it through an exhaust tube. The baffle clips into a slot in the housing cover and deflects that air across the sensing chamber, developing the pressure differential the housing needs to draw a representative sample. Simplex is explicit that a baffle must be fitted in every duct housing.

Check the housing generation before ordering. The later 4098-9685, 4098-9688, 4098-9755 and 4098-9756 duct units use a stationary built-in baffle and take no loose baffle at all.
