Simplex 4906-9104 — a ceiling-mount TrueAlert multi-candela visible-only (V/O) notification appliance: a 24 VDC synchronized xenon strobe in a white housing with red FIRE lettering.
This is a strobe alone, with no horn and no speaker — the appliance you use where visible notification is required but audible output is provided elsewhere. Intensity is selected in the field to 15, 30, 75 or 110 candela using a plug at the back of the housing, with a yellow flag showing the chosen setting through a slot beside the lens, and the factory setting is 15 cd. One model therefore covers four candela ratings, which keeps site inventory small and absorbs the intensity changes that surface during construction. The polarized input connects to a compatible reverse-polarity supervised NAC, and a regulated circuit design holds the flash output consistent while controlling inrush current. Strobes flash together at 1 Hz when driven from a panel NAC selected for strobe synchronization or SmartSync two-wire control, from a 4009 IDNet NAC Extender, or from a separate synchronization or SmartSync control module. The housing is rugged, high-impact, flame-retardant thermoplastic, impact and vandal resistant, and its rear does not extend into the box.

Installation notes

Size the NAC from the maximum RMS rating. Strobe designs are constant wattage, so maximum RMS current occurs at the lowest allowable operating voltage. Circuit loading calculations should use the 316 mA nameplate figure at 110 cd, not the 211 mA drawn at 24 VDC.

16 VDC is an absolute floor: the 16 to 33 VDC range is the absolute operating range and operation outside it may cause permanent damage to the strobe. 16 VDC is the lowest voltage allowed at the last appliance on the NAC under worst-case conditions.

Set candela from the rear: the intensity selection plug is accessible only from the rear of the housing, so choose the setting before mounting; verify it afterwards through the intensity viewing slot at the side of the lens.

Ceiling boxes are single gang for this model, unlike the wall-mount strobes, which take single gang, double gang or 4 in. square boxes.

Surface mounting to a handy box requires the 4905-9910 zinc-plated surface mount adapter plate — unless the 4905-9926 ceiling wire guard is used, in which case the plate is not needed.

Synchronization is worth having: where multiple strobes and their reflections are visible from one location, synchronized flashing reduces the probability of photo-sensitive reactions as well as the distraction of random flashing.

Application selection: correct visible notification depends on occupancy, location and local codes — apply NFPA 72, ANSI A117.1, the governing model building code and the ADA guidelines.
