Simplex 4905-9923 — red surface mount box for rectangular A/V and S/V notification appliances.
Where a wall has no cavity to recess an electrical box into, the appliance must sit proud of the surface with conduit entering a box mounted on the wall face. This is that box, sized to the rectangular Simplex horn/strobe and speaker/strobe housings so the appliance mounts straight to it with no adapter plate or skirt in the stack. Concrete, block and exposed conduit are the usual reasons it is specified.

It is a box, not a cover: 4905-9937 and 4905-9940 are shallow adapter skirts that dress an existing 4" square box, 4905-9915 and 4905-9916 are surface mount box adapters, and 4905-9931 adapts appliances to an older 2975-9145 box.
