M847D-ZONE/U — Honeywell Home (Resideo) TrueZone direct drive damper actuator: a two-position, 24 Vac spring return replacement motor for ARD and ZD series zone dampers, mounting directly to the damper shaft.
The M847D actuators are designed to operate directly driven zone or vent dampers used to control air flow in ducts. The M847D-ZONE is the ARD/ZD version: those dampers are spring-open, so the actuator is wired to terminals M1 and M6 and requires 24 V to power the damper closed, with the spring returning it open when power is removed. An optional M4 connection powers an LED indicator only. Wiring uses tool-less insertion of 18–22 AWG solid wire, and a range stop adjustment on the face of the actuator sets the closed-position bleed rate so a zone can be given a minimum airflow.

Installation notes

ZONE vs. VENT: the M847D-ZONE is for ARD and ZD dampers. EARD ventilation dampers use the M847D-VENT instead — the EARD is a spring-closed damper powered open through its VENT terminals, the opposite action. Do not substitute one for the other.

Older coupling-style dampers: most versions of ARD and ZD dampers work with the M847D-ZONE, but some older ARD and ZD dampers have a different shaft diameter and the actuator will not fit; Resideo no longer offers the shaft adapter.

Replacement on an ARD damper: disconnect the motor wiring, loosen the motor coupling from the blade shaft with a 1/8 in. hex wrench, note the damper blades are in the normal spring-open position, fit the new motor and tighten the coupling, then reconnect.

Replacement on a ZDS or ZDB damper: loosen the Allen screw above the faceplate with a 3/16 in. hex wrench; when fitting the new motor make sure the standoff on the motor seats in the grommet on the faceplate, with the setscrew pointing toward the damper label.

Do not force the shaft: never rotate the actuator by turning the connection coupling or damper shaft while connected — this can damage the gear train.

Never on a flue damper: the manufacturer explicitly warns against installing this actuator on a flue damper.

Checkout: applying 24 Vac to M1 and M6 should drive the motor to the closed position; removing power should release it to spring return open. If full opening and closing is not achieved, check that the lower adjustment lever is at the extreme left and the upper lever at the extreme right.

Power before wiring: disconnect the power supply before installation and wiring; all wiring must comply with local electrical codes.
