Edwards 3-CPU3 — the Central Processing Unit module for the EST3 Life Safety Platform, monitoring the status of all modules and providing the link for network communications.
Although each local rail card carries its own microprocessor, the 3-CPU3 handles all inter-module communication and can download rail module operating parameters. On power up it automatically learns every local rail module’s attributes and location; site-specific software is loaded into the 3-CPU3, which then distributes data to each local rail module. Firmware upgrades are performed from the 3-CPU3, so there is no need to unplug chips on the rail modules. As a stand-alone node a single 3-CPU3 controls 1 to 19 additional local rail modules; for larger systems up to 64 nodes interconnect on a peer-to-peer multi-priority token ring network where no node is master, giving network alarm response in under three seconds.
Slots at the back of the module accept the network and RS-232 option cards. Removable terminal blocks carry network and audio data wiring, and the on-board common relays terminate at the 3-CPU3 terminals.

Installation notes

Fixed mounting position: the 3-CPU3 must be mounted in the first two local rail spaces of the upper 3-CHAS7 module chassis. It is not free to sit anywhere on the rail.

Read the current figures carefully: the data sheet notes that CPU current includes the main power supply, because the CPU and PPS cannot be measured separately. Do not add a separate primary power supply draw on top of the 155 mA / 165 mA figures when doing a battery calculation.

Doors are a separate order: the 3-CPUDR (CPU doors with filler plates) must be ordered separately — one is required per CPU where no LCD display is installed.

Option cards are separate: the LCD display and User Interface, the 3-RS232 communication card, and the 3-RS485A / 3-RS485B network communication cards are all ordered separately and mount to the back of the 3-CPU3. Each adds current: 3-RS232 58 mA standby and alarm; 3-RS485A and 3-RS485B 98 mA standby and alarm.

Card selection — note a conflict in the data sheet: the specification table lists the 3-RS485B as “one Class A or Class X network data circuit and one Class B audio data circuit,” while the Application text describes the same card twice in consecutive sentences, first as Class B, Class A or Class X for network data, then as Class B or Class A only. The three statements do not agree; confirm the required class with Edwards or the installation sheet before committing a network design. The 3-RS485A is consistently described as Class A, Class X or Class B for network signals with support for Class B, Class A or Class X digitized audio.

Network wiring: maximum #14 AWG (1.5 mm²), minimum #18 AWG (0.75 mm²). Class A and Class X network data requires one pair of wires connecting the last node back to the first. Class A and Class X audio data requires two pairs running in opposite directions, originating at the node containing the ASU. Shields, if used, must be continuous and insulated from ground except at the originating panel.

Backward compatibility: the 3-CPU3 is fully compatible on the same network with 3-CPU and 3-CPU1 modules.

EN 54 versions: for EN 54-compliant product, add the suffix -E to the model number (3-CPU3-E, 3-RS485A-E, and so on). The suffixed part is a different catalog number.
